How to Get to Ancient Olympia
From the Katakolo cruise port, from Athens, and by bus and train — reaching the sanctuary in the western Peloponnese.
Ancient Olympia sits in the western Peloponnese, beside the modern village of Archaia Olympia. Most international visitors arrive one of two ways: as a shore excursion from the cruise port of Katakolo, or as a day trip from Athens or the Peloponnese. Here are the options and how long each takes.
From the Katakolo cruise port
Olympia is the headline shore excursion from Katakolo, about 30–45 minutes away by road. Ships dock for a fixed window, so the key is to move quickly off the ship and have your entry already reserved — queuing at the ticket office can eat into your limited time ashore. Allow at least 2.5–3 hours on site and budget the return drive comfortably inside your all-aboard time.
With a dated ticket reserved for your port day, you walk straight to the gate while others wait — exactly what you want when the clock is running.
From Athens and the Peloponnese
By car from Athens it's roughly a 3.5–4 hour drive across the Peloponnese — many visitors combine it with Nafplio, Mycenae or the coast over a couple of days. By public transport, KTEL intercity buses serve Olympia, and train/bus connections run via the town of Pyrgos, about 30 minutes away. The site and both museums are together beside the village, so once you arrive everything is within walking distance.
There's no need to fix an exact arrival time: your ticket is reserved for the date you choose, so come whenever suits your day.
Making the most of your visit
However you arrive, plan the open site first while it's cool and the museums afterwards. Wear sturdy shoes for gravel and ancient paving, bring a hat and water for the shadeless areas, and leave time for the stadium — it's a walk out to the far end of the sanctuary and back, and the part most people are gladdest they didn't rush.
